Future of the Setbacks

September 12th, 2007

As mentioned on MTV, CNN, NBC and TVO... I, Steve Palmer, the lead singer of the Setbacks am moving to Vancouver for the next two years. What does this mean for your absolute favourite band in the universe? I don't know, but I'll ask the newly reformed Backstreet Boys how they'll manage.

But back to the Setbacks - purveyors of old timey punk-a-rawk-n-roll and most likely your 2nd favourite band in the universe - well, we're going to enter a bit of a hiatus while I'm on the left coast. Since we've been playing only every 3 months or so for the last year, hell, some of you less observant fans might not even notice we're gone.

While I'm in Vancouver I've set a goal for myself to write a song a day. By the time I'm back I'll have 730+ songs. That's a lot of material. Shouldn't be too hard to whittle that down to 60 tracks for a triple LP release in fall 2009.

Seriously though - while I'm out west I'll be back in Ottawa a few times a year and if we can schedule it we'll try to book a show while I'm in town. Despite what Trevor says on stage, the band is not dead and we are not calling it quits. We're just hibernating for a bit.

    The Summer of The Setbacks

    May 16th, 2007

Since the release of the Bless My Soul, The Setbacks have been keeping pretty quiet – flying in the face of conventional wisdom that dictates striking while the iron is hot. Well, ideally the iron hasn’t completely cooled off, because The Setbacks are about to strike. And strike hard.

Get the summer started of right, with an incredible quadruple bill on June 16th at Café Dekcuf in Ottawa. The Setbacks will share the stage with The Bella Bombs, The G-Men (Toronto), and Mannon & The Guestlist (Mtl). The combined rock mass of this show will cause this second floor venue to collapse. Safest place to be is in the club.

Later on, in the throes of summer, come and cool off with The Setbacks at Irene’s on July 28th. We’ll be hitting the bricks with Toronto scum rock gods Maximum RnR, fresh off their European tour. The rock will be so ice cold you’ll want to wear a parka despite the potential for fifty degree celsius weather.

Look for more announcements in the coming week as we kick off the Summer of the Setbacks.

    Shows/Mustaches/Album

    November 17th, 2006

Lots of news in camp Setbacks. First off is a show we are playing with Embassies of Denmark and The Life and Times at Cafe Dekcuf on December 1st.

Second off, all of the Setbacks are growing mustaches for charity. This is the second year that all four of us have participated in Mustaches for Kids Ottawa. You can check out more information on this awesome charity at www.m4kottawa.org.

The new album is being manufactured, set for a January release. Stay tuned for big news on that.

Feed The Homeless - Benefit Compilation Album

    November 9th, 2006

The Setbacks have donated one previously unreleased track to a compilation album featuring some of Ottawa's hottest acts. The album is called Feed The Homeless and is from the Ottawa-based Help The Homeless Committee. All proceeds from the album sales go to help feed less fortunate people across the Ottawa region through the Shepherds of Good Hope.

The digital album can be purchased through Zunior.com. This link will take you right there. You can even listen to tracks!

The Setbacks have donated the track Salivation Army from our upcoming album (it is incorrectly identified as Salvation on the cd... oh well). Also featured on the album is Harshey, F!ght F!ght F!ght, The Double Pumpers, Tokyo Sex Whale, and many other incredible acts.

Pick it up now and feel better about yourself.

Also note that there is a benefit show to celebrate the release of this album on November 25th at Zaphods. The show will feature F!ght F!ght F!ght, Mile Over Mecca, and Ana Muira. The Setbacks aren't playing, but fully endorse this show.

    Friday the 13th Show

    October 11th, 2006

Come on down to Zaphod's on Friday October 13th to see The Setbacks debut several songs from their upcoming cd (as well as some of the old favourites). Get out early, because The Creeps and A Dying Breed will be playing as well.

    Awesome times. Guaranteed.

    Recording Update

    September 13th, 2006

Last night The Setbacks completely wrapped up recording for our upcoming full length album. In all we did 10 songs, all of which turned out better than we could have hoped. All that's left now is The Three M's: mixing, mastering, and manufacturing.

The tentative title of the album is Bless My Soul. If everything goes smoothly, we may have copies ready for our October 13th show at Zaphod's in Ottawa with The Creeps. Keep your fingers crossed!

    The Setbacks Sell Out

    July 17th, 2006

That's right folks. You might have heard our songs recently on Ottawa's new alternative commercial radio station, Live 88.5. The reason behind this is that we've decided to make a run for their Big Money Shot contest. The winner takes home $300,000 clams worth of stuff. Big money as it were.

That being said, we need to strut our stuff in front of judges and the general public. We've been slated to play on Friday July 28, at the Thirsty Scholar in Ottawa.

So if you're so inclined, come on down. If you've ventured onto our page because of this contest, feel free to download songs from our Music section, or our MySpace page www.myspace.com/thesetbacksrock.

    New Setbacks

    July 5th, 2006

We're in the midst of recording tracks for a full length album that we'll hopefully have done in the next couple of months, but instead of making you wait until then we've posted a lil' something something to tide you over.
